Retrospective June 2025

Crawling over the halfway hill

Wild to be crossing off the halfway point of the year already for both the newsletter and for 2025, this year has very much been the ride that feels like it keeps picking up speed. I run through the halfway point of 2025 at a bit of a lull if I am completely honest with you.

This month has been a bit everywhere with daycare sickness running rampant at home (if you know, you know) as well as the weather in Sydney been blisteringly cold to top it off. I haven’t done much in terms of photography this month other than my usual out and a bout with my camera on an almost daily basis.

This is probably a good point to take stock of how good a year it has been so far and even though this is a current lull, there are a lot of things on the horizon that area slow burn but thats how you get things done.

Case of a broken bezel

I noticed this crack on the bezel of my Baltic Aquascaphe GMT and I am very sad about it. It is a very, very strange break as well because there is no crack or break on the surface of the bezel, also no dent or impact on the edge of it either. I don’t think this will have any real effect on its function or waterproof but it’s a battle scar for sure.

I have had a domain and plan for this for quite a while now and am finally putting some effort into publishing a series of posts and maybe videos as well if they’re received. I am thinking of also making a new email list for this specifically and delivering each article in an email as well. This has been a project I have had tinkering in the back of my mind for about 5 years now so it’s nice to finally put some pen to paper and commit to it.

Captured my interest

Leica 100 event in Wetzlar - This looked like an incredible event and I was glued to peoples stories who were there living vicariously through them. Talking to Iain Farrell of the Prime Lenses Podcast who was there and recorded with some incredible people and I can’t wait to hear it all when it’s launched.

Light Lens Lab 35mm f1.4 AA - I have really been enjoying the 35mm focal length as a default carry on the M10. Going from the 7Artisans 35mm f2 Wen to the Voigtlander 35mm f2 Ultron II was a huge improvement in my opinion. Since then I have been very tempted looking around at faster 35mm lenses and whats on offer. This one from Light lens lab has been teased for a long time.

Thypoch Simera 21mm f1.4 - Thypoch have been knocking it out of the park for a while now with their fast aperture M mount lenses now in 21/28/35/50/75mm. The newest of the bunch is this 21mm which looks like it performs really well. The 50mm f1.4 they make has been super tempting with its incredible performance as well.

That wraps up June

That caps the end of the first half of 2025, out with a fizzle rather than a bang but onwards we roll. I have a few things I am working on a few things that are coming which will be fun. Also planning to meetup with a friend who will be in Sydney in July which will be great fun.

Bye for now,

Tom
