Rather than "Should I do this" I want to embrace more "Can I do this"

Right now as I write this post it is the very premise of what I am wanting to do more of. I am writing this on an Asus E200H which I bought in 2016 as a small laptop I planned to carry with me for the light work I needed to do on the go at my job. In the time that has gone by since then it has sat dormant in a box until 10 years later it is reborn with a dead battery and a fresh install to run Linux giving it new life as a digital typewriter at 20 minutes to midnight on a Wednesday night.

New financial year, new me

Happy new financial year for all those that celebrate it. This month has some fun updates and things that have been happening, and a new section so lets dig in.

Photography is in my opinion one of the best hobbies out there. One thing I think is a misunderstanding that photography and progress as a photographer happens from going on new adventures and seeing new things, I’ve absolutely had those thoughts previously. I think another perspective needs to be considered though, that if creativity through repetition.

Halfway to 2027 already?

I know at this point the opening to these posts has basically become “wow the year has gone quick” but come on its the end of June! As the new financial year opens there has been plenty going on in my world and some nice little personal milestones sprinkled in. This month has been a good time for adventures and pictures.

I've always thought that the 35 mm focal length has been a bit of a plain focal length in my opinion, it's not as wide and expansive as a 28 mm and not as intentional as a 50 mm. This coming from someone who has shot 90% of their work through a 50 mm field of view might not shock you that it's easily my favourite focal length.

The year just keeps rolling on

Another month has come and gone and this end of month coming up for air really just reminds me how fast the year rolls through because we’re on the cusp of the half way point. There has been lots going on and a lot of my time has been spent writing more which is something I have wanted to do more of this year.

I have always been someone who has a lot of ideas all the time, note books full of different things that have sparked and ticked over in my head over the years. The main problem has always been that they have always just been notes in a book rather than being actioned on which takes the real effort.

Over the last few months I have been working away nights and weekends on something that I have not only made a lot of progress on but actually am really close to publishing. This is not a sales pitch, you're not the market for it. I would like to introduce you to The Scroll Stopping Photo Guide.

Have we finally hit a groove? After the start of the year and the whirlwind it feels like it has been, it really does feel like the waves are settling. This last month has had some fun adventures and a big step forward on some projects.

AI stands for 'Actually, It depends'.

Part of my job over the last couple of years really has been working out how AI fits into how I do my work, if it will take my job eventually, and can I take any of the learnings and apply them to help with the creative side of my life.

So here we are in March already, it almost feels like I have blacked our and have only just realised that the month is done. This really has been a super busy month with some huge changes to our life at home so I better catch you up. Also probably a few things I have worked out with these changes too.

Remember all my big plans from last month about publishing more and doing two video a month? What a wonderful plan I had. Here we are in February and I’ve already faltered on the video plan, well mostly.

Now call me crazy but didn’t I just send out the December retrospective and tell you all to have a great time? How has January come and gone already? The whirlwind has continued for me as you will see below. I have very much hit the ground running and I know its going to be a very busy but very good year.

If you’re reading this, no you’re not going crazy and no it’s not the end of the month yet. 2026 is going to bring more of me to your inbox a mid month piece that is a little more focused on a single topic, or a little more broad on whats going on in my head like this one.

Well, well, well here we are. Look at you, hungover, lying in your bed having waited for 2025 to leave and 2026 to arrive. I just put my daugher to bed for the last time as a one year old (new years day baby), the big bash is on and I have a birthday cake to make so lets get into it.

Every time I sit down and write one of these newsletters I always feel like the month has raced away and I can’t believe I am writing the next one. This project has been a lot of fun and I can’t believe that I have nearly completed an entire year of the monthly recap.

This months has been incredibly busy and there has been a lot of running around a lot of changes going on in my life. There have been a few new additions to the bag thanks to a couple of very nice deals from eBay.

October in Australia usually gives us a glimpse of weather to come and this year has been no different. We’ve had cold days, incredibly hot days and cold mornings that end up being hot days with a thunderstorm in the evening to bring the temperature right back down.

One of the best things though is getting daylight savings back, the extended light lasting all the way up to 7pm now is brilliant. It brings a freshness of possibilities for what’s possible once we put Bronte to bed.

My wife and I have been talking about getting a big photo quality printer for a few months now, during the prime day sales the one we had been looking at became a price a little too good and so we bit the bullet. Welcome to the start of the rabbit hole.
