Retrospective April 2025

There are very few phrases that have 'forth' in them

Friends, I can't believe we're on our 4th newsletter. April has been a busy one on the family front. We took some time off between the Easter and Anzac day (10 days off by only using 3 days of annual leave is magical).

This months newsletter will be a little light on things I have been doing as I have been spending a lot of time behind the camera so check out the gallery at the bottom.

There are 3 options currently up on the website available for purchase. It is really exciting, I have wanted to have prints for sales for a very long time now and am very proud of the images that I have already put up. I am equally excited for the images still to come.

My wife's favourite event of the year. The Camden show has been around since 1886 and carry's the motto 'Still a Country Show'. This year was pretty special as it was my daughters first Camden show.

I am a developer in my day job so this was very much written from experience of working on web projects. There is also a great article I referenced from Lucy Lumen's Blog. If you're thinking about building a website or have one that you 'finished' I think this article would be well worth a read.

Prime Lenses - Focus Points

I sat down with Iain of the Prime Lenses podcast a while ago to do speed round of questions. I started listening to Prime lenses around episode 6 or 7 and immediately went back and listened to all of the earlier ones and have listened to every episode since. Iain is a brilliant interviewer and the array of guests he have walk all forms of life and photographic style so there is always a great new perspective.

Painting my daughters room

My wife and I wanted to do this before she was born but time just slipped away to do it. We spent 2 days during our time off and did the white walls with the skirting boards and doors in a light blue.

Captured my interest

DaVinci Resolve 20 - There are some huge features coming in with the latest version of resolve which at the time of this newsletter is in Beta 2. There are some great videos out there explaining the new features, these ones from Jake Felzien are great:
- DaVinci Resolve 20 is...
- The best new DaVinci Resolve 20 feature

Zeiss 38mm f2.8 in M mount - I have the original Contax T sitting on a shelf in my living room. It's very beaten up but the lens is absolutely perfect and I keep it because I would love to get my one converted into M mount. It very much feels like a lens that would be incredible to have in the collection. This video from Brandon Y Lee has some great stills and video footage that really re-triggered my want for one.

Polaroid Flip - I have to shout shit one out because the focus system in this camera is so clever. Having a rather simple solution enables them to keep the cost down while giving better results at different subject distances. This video from Kai W is worth a watch

Matt D'Avella video - I am always looking for new book inspirations and this one was immediately ordered after watching this.

That wraps up April

I think that this month is again proof that small movements forward keep the momentum going. Things that I have spoken about in previous newsletters finally coming to life and being things I can share with people is the continuing motivator of this newsletter.

Bye for now,

Tom
