Artemis Wines
A little over an hour outside of Sydney lies a perfect destination for a weekend trip. Artemis wines hold some very impressive milestones in their history. As one of the first wineries in the Southern Highlands, and the first in the region to plant Pinot Noir.
A short distance outside of Mittagong brings you to a sharp turn off of the Old Hume Highway. Ending up on an unsealed dirt track can let you come to the conclusion you're in the wrong spot. Following the track through then encroaching bush opens up to reveal Artemis wines.
The weekend is perfect to see all that Artemis has to offer. The outdoor space will be full with, hens parties, birthday celebrations, dates and a family get-together or two. Being a dog friendly winery as well means you will see plenty of fury friends around.
If the sun is shining, everyone tends to get the same idea so booking ahead is recommended. If you do miss out on a table the hill is a perfect place for a blanket and a bottle of wine.
Another draw of Artemis as a destination is clear as soon as you smell the wood fire pizza. Weather permitting, pizzas are available on Weekends. If you do come during the week there are other nibbles available.
Artemis also have a distillery producing a variety of Gins, Brandy's and Baiju's. You can sample a mix and match of what the distillery has on offer through the cellar door tastings.
While there I sampled the 2021 Artemis Pinot Noir. The deep ruby red colour gives way to flavours of red fruits with notes of strawberry and cherry which adorn the palette. A dry finish bringing you back to the start hoping the glass never empties. At $9 a glass or $25 for the bottle there is great value to be had.
As well as the wine I could easily recommend the pizzas, having sampled 'The Chickavore'. Roast chicken joined by a collection of meats on a fantastic base. At $28 for a gourmet pizza. We're at the higher side of the budget for pizza, but for the location and experience it's justifiable.
If you're looking to head out of the city as the weather warms up I recommend putting Atermis wines into the GPS. You can thank me later.
